This Site

This site, which will always be a work in progress, is a labour of love by Joseph Caruana, who first fell in love with Dwejra in his childhood while seeking dark skies from where to observe the Milky Way. Over the years, Joseph amassed a large library of images of Dwejra, some of which are featured on these pages. These photographs capture views of its landscape, underwater scenery and starry skies, and apart from conveying the allure of this site, serve to document ongoing changes, both natural and manmade.  This website is envisaged to become a portal via which people from all walks of life can learn more about this site of exceptional, if sometimes under-appreciated, beauty and importance.

The author: Joseph Caruana

Having first become enthralled with astronomy as a child after viewing a star-studded sky,  Joseph completed his undergraduate studies in physics and mathematics at the University of Malta and read for a doctorate in astrophysics at the University of Oxford.  Afterwards, he carried out postdoctoral work at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam, Germany.  Presently, he lectures and researches astrophysics at the University of Malta within the Department of Physics and Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy.  In his free time, he loves to photograph the world around him, explore the underwater realm, research decompression theory, and play the piano.

Dwejra remains his favourite place in the world, and to this end he strives to spread awareness amongst the public and the authorities alike about its beauty, importance and constant need for protection and conservation, particularly with regards to the preservation of its dark skies.
